Chronic Illness and Changes in Appearance: Finding a New Normal

By: Shawne Poplar, MA LPC-S Licensed Professional Counselor

Dealing with changes in appearance after a chronic illness can be a challenging and emotional experience. Chronic illnesses can often have physical and emotional side effects, including changes to our appearance, which can impact our self-esteem and body image.

Here are a few strategies that may be helpful in coping with changes in appearance after a chronic illness:

Seek support

It can be helpful to talk with a trusted friend, family member, or therapist about your feelings and concerns. They can provide a listening ear and offer a supportive and understanding perspective.

Practice self-compassion

It is important to be kind to yourself and to recognize that the changes you are experiencing are a result of your illness and are not a reflection of your worth as a person.

Find ways to express yourself

Consider finding creative outlets, such as art, writing, or music, to express your feelings and emotions about the changes you are experiencing.

Seek out resources

There may be online communities or support groups specifically for individuals dealing with changes in appearance after a chronic illness. These can be a great resource for finding support and connecting with others who understand what you are going through.

Practice self-care

Take time to care for yourself and do things that bring you joy and relaxation. This may include activities such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time with loved ones.

Remember, it is completely normal to have a range of emotions when dealing with changes in appearance after a chronic illness. It is important to be patient with yourself and to allow yourself time to adjust to these changes. With the right support and self-care practices, you can learn to embrace your new appearance and find ways to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin.
